flamboree
1. Flamboree

Falmboree has just opened in Old Street and it’s all about the tarte flambée. And if you don’t know what that it is then we can tell you that you’re definitely going to love it as it’s a bit like pizza but much lighter and healthier – we demolished a whole one each for lunch one day and went straight back to work without the need for a lie down first. Only 550 cals too so you really can’t argue with that.

Flamboree is super cheap too with the classic, topped with Dingley Dell smoky bacon lardons, crème fraiche, red onions, Emmental, and herb aioli coming in at just £8.95. If you work in the area or you’re heading out for the night in Shoreditch, Flamboree is well worth checking out.

Top Cuvée
2. Top Cuvée

Top Cuvée, a wine bar and restaurant that recently opened in Finsbury Park, is pretty much the perfect neighbourhood restaurant. It’s got relatively simple but very well executed dishes at reasonable prices; it’s got an interesting wine list with some excellent natural, biodynamic wines; and it’s got very friendly service by genuinely welcoming people with not a hint of ego.

On the food front first of all, we can definitely recommend sharing a few dishes, beginning with the croquettes; hot crispy spheres stuffed with sweet potato and sage. The burrata with pickled carrots and hazelnuts is another winner but the must order of the smaller plates has to be the beef and smoked eel tartare with wild garlic – may not sound like an obvious combo but man does it work.

If you live in the area we think this is definitely one for you to check out – you really couldn’t ask to have more from your neighbourhood local.

Xier
3. Xier

Naples-born chef Carlo Scotto, who was previously at Babbo and Angela Hartnett’s Murano, has just opened his first solo restaurant Xier, in London’s Marylebone. Located on Thayer Street right between St Christopher’s Place, Oxford Street and Marylebone High Street, the restaurant offers casual ground floor dining with XR and then the fine dining approach for lunch and dinner with upstairs at Xier. 

The modern European and global influences can be played out over a ten-course tasting menu that will set you back £90. Expect dishes such as zingy red prawn crudo, raspberry, red caviar and yuzu; rose-cured salmon, foie gras, rhubarb and Bramley apple; and lamb sweetbread with kohlrabi jam, pickled kohlrabi and spinach.

Adam Handling
4. Adam Handling at The Belmond Cadogan Hotel

After a four year renovation Belmond, have just relaunched The Cadogan Hotel in Chelsea, and that includes a whole new food and drink line up. Adam Handling has taken on the role of Chef Patron and that means he’s in charge of the restaurant, tea room, bar and room service too.

As well as catering for hotel guests, the restaurant Adam Handling Chelsea is a standalone space with its own street entrance.  Some of his signature dishes, like the cheese doughnuts, make an appearance on the Chelsea menu, alongside the likes of Highland wagyu beef with braised onions and smoked bone marrow, and scallop ceviche with green tomato.

Angelina small plates

5. Angelina

If you often find yourself torn between pasta and sushi, fear no more because Angelina, which’ll serve a mash-up of Italianand Japanese food has just opened in Dalston. Whilst the two may seem disconnected initially, both cuisines focus on seasonality, regionality and respect for produce, so we can see where the team is going with this.

Angelina is offering an eight-course tasting menu costing £48 (with Italian wine pairing for £45), with dishes like unagi risotto with burnt soy butter and dashi; crudite of tuna, prawn and bream; sirloin with radicchio and hibachi; and black sesame panna cotta and milk chocolate.

The space is also home to a tiny Tokyo-style cocktail bar with just six seats called Golden Gai.

6. Gloria

Parisian restaurant group Big Mamma operate some of the best Italian restaurants in Paris, including our favourite brunch spot, Big Love. They recently made the move to London, opening an Italian trattoria called Gloria opening in Shoreditch – if you’ve walked down Great Eastern Street lately you will have noticed the bright yellow exterioir, absolutely covered in plants and foliage. It’s certainly a bright spot on an otherwise unremarkbale main road. The menu proudly celebrates the best produce Italy has to offer – the team spent three years exploring and sourcing ingredients from all over Italy.  They make a hell of a lot on site too, including fresh pasta, coffee, gelato, home-brewed beer and limoncello.
